Description
The rain garden shown in the photo is an example of a mitigation solution designed to promote sustainable stormwater management in urban areas. It is located in a low-lying area between the sidewalk and the street and is planted with vegetation that is resistant to both periodic flooding and drought.
The garden collects water runoff from impervious surfaces such as sidewalks, rooftops, and roads, and then allows it to gradually infiltrate into the ground. Thanks to the filtration layers beneath the surface—comprising gravel, sand, and soil—the water is pretreated and cleansed of pollutants such as dust, heavy metals, and oils.
This solution also helps to reduce the burden on stormwater drainage systems and lowers the risk of flooding after heavy rainfall events.
