Germany's largest rooftop greenhouse opened
Shop downstairs in the supermarket while lettuce grows upstairs: With the new REWE Green Farming Market Berlin, agriculture is moving right into the heart of the German capital. Germany's largest rooftop farm is being built above the wooden market hall, covering 2,760 square meters. Starting this summer, salad mixes branded as Lankwitz leaf lettuce will grow there, just a few meters above shoppers' heads. The opening of REWE Green Farming Berlin on May 21, 2026, marks the launch of a new generation of circular supermarkets made of wood and integrated with urban food production.

"With REWE Green Farming, we are further developing our green building strategy and combining circular construction with urban food cultivation," explains Peter Maly, CEO of the REWE Group. The core element of the new generation of supermarkets is wood. This renewable raw material offers clear advantages over conventional building materials: it stores carbon, and thanks to the modular construction, the timber components can be dismantled and prepared for reuse. In total, around 1,800 cubic meters of locally sourced softwood were used in the structure, storing approximately 930 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
The sustainability concept continues during operation. Waste heat from the supermarket, a heat pump, and rainwater collected in a cistern create optimal growing conditions for the rooftop greenhouse. The building also operates on 100% renewable electricity and includes around 200 solar panels. According to REWE, the market consumes around 50% less energy than conventional supermarkets.
What still seems special today will become standard tomorrow, according to Peter Maly: "Our new generation of supermarkets is now going into series production; thanks to the modular construction, we can optimally adapt roof use to each location. We are already planning additional timber-frame stores in Germany."

Lankwitz leaf lettuce\
It takes just 23 days for the lettuce to go from the roof to the shelf. Behind this cultivation concept stands ECF Farmsystems: the Berlin-based company will operate the glass-enclosed rooftop farm. The team, led by founder Nicolas Leschke, focuses on innovative food production in urban environments. Starting this summer, the first lettuce will be harvested directly from the supermarket roof. Agrikol carried out the building and installation works for this project
The Lankwitz leaf lettuce grown at REWE Green Farming Berlin includes butterhead lettuce, romaine lettuce, Lollo Rosso, and dark green Easy Leaf lettuce. The plants are cultivated using an automated hydroponic growing process with almost no soil. "The lettuce grows on special trays that are flooded with a nutrient solution several times a day," explains Nicolas Leschke, Managing Director of ECF Farmsystems.
Following daily harvest, the lettuce is processed, packaged, and prepared for sale directly inside the supermarket. In the future, the rooftop farm is expected to produce up to 900,000 salad mixes annually, supplying around 500 REWE supermarkets across the Berlin metropolitan region.
The supermarket itself offers 2,150 square meters of retail space with more than 20,000 products, including a strong focus on regional suppliers and fresh produce. The project has already received recognition as a "Climate Protection Partner Berlin 2025" by the Berlin Chamber of Commerce.
