Description

Prolonged periods of extremely dry and wet climatic conditions have negatively impacted the natural environment all around the world. With less rain, water source dwindles. With more precipitation, inundation occurs. These events are exacerbated even more by climate change. Hence, Climate Cafe, an education concept, was born. It brings together people of diverse scientific backgrounds to collaborate and device ingenious and implementable low-cost yet implementable solutions to help communities adapt to climate change.

The first Climate Cafe activity held in Cebu, Philippines, known as the River Scan Challenge, took place in 2017. Its primary objectives centered on the investigation of the water quality of the rivers and creeks that are heavily polluted by wastes coming from domestic households, agricultural lands, and the industrial sector. It also investigated the flooding incidences in low-lying areas through interviews with people living near the said bodies of water. The four other climate cafe activities that followed thereafter had the same objectives.

The objectives, however, during the 6th River Scan Challenge last April 2024, was different from the previous ones. Stakeholders residing near the rivers participated a community workshop organized by USC. The participants were made to identify the problems they perceive in the community and come up of ideas to resolve them. Students used these ideas to propose solutions that can help address the current issues identified.

The River Scan Challenge, now in its 7th year, stands as a testament to the power of collective action. Coordinated by the University of San Carlos, through its Community Extension Services (CES) unit and the External Relations and Internationalization Office (ERIO), in the Philippines, alongside partners from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, this ongoing collaboration provides a platform for students, practitioners, government officials, and community stakeholders to work together towards sustainable solutions.
