Description

With the quickly rising sea level, dykes along coasts everywhere have to be reinforced and elevated. Given the costs of this process, there’s an ongoing search for innovative ways of reinforcing dykes in cheaper and quicker ways, of which the Broad Green Dyke might be one. Instead of reinforcing the dyke with asphalt, as would be done normally, this dyke is being reinforced with clay and grass surfaces, creating a more natural dyke. This requires a lot of clay, which is retrieved from sludge from the Eems-Dollard through so-called clay depots. As a somewhat new process of retrieving clay, there are different trial runs in these depots to see which methods work quickest and most effectively. Once the clay is ready to be used, it will be tested on a 1 kilometer strip of the dyke first to see how well it works, and will be extended to the rest of the dyke if successful. And who knows, maybe all the dykes will be green in a few years!

Met de snel stijgende zeespiegel moeten dijken in de hele regio continu versterkt en verhoogt worden. Omdat dit veel kosten met zich meebrengt wordt er gezocht naar innovaties die het versterken sneller en goedkoper kunnen maken, waarvan de Brede Groene Dijk er één is. In plaats van de dijk verhogen met asfalt wordt dat hier gedaan met klei en een grasmat, zodat er een meer natuurlijke dijk ontstaat. Hiervoor is enorm veel klei nodig, wat via een speciaal aangelegde kleidepot en kleirijperij uit het slib uit de Eems-Dollard wordt gehaald. Daarin worden allerlei testen gedaan met verschillende manieren van kleirijpen, om te zien wat het snelst effectiefst werkt. Omdat deze vorm van dijkversterking nieuw is wordt er eerst een deel van de dijk versterkt en getest, waarna het project kan worden uitgebreid bij succes. En wie weet, misschien zijn alle dijken straks groen!
