Description
Leshan Pocket Park is a compact urban green intervention in Shanghai, designed as an 80-metre linear “backbone” that connects surrounding public spaces through a series of gallery-like structures. The project demonstrates how small-scale green infrastructure can improve environmental quality and social functionality in dense urban settings.
The park integrates multiple user-oriented functions, including reading areas, children’s play spaces, and outdoor fitness equipment. Vegetation, paving materials, and urban furniture are strategically combined to structure space, increase shading, and improve microclimatic conditions.
The design merges contemporary behavioural research with principles derived from the traditional Shanshui landscape approach, creating a multifunctional and culturally embedded public space.
As a pocket park intervention, the project contributes to:
- Local heat stress reduction through vegetation and shading
- Increased urban permeability and ecological value
- Social cohesion and community interaction
- Activation of underused urban residual space
